Neuropsychological Services provides comprehensive consultation, evaluation and intervention services via a holistic view of the individual. For the Geriatric patient Neuropsychological Services can provide information of the strengths and weaknesses in a person's cognitive abilities and emotional state. Assessment can determine degrees of dementia and identify potential red flags.

The Office of the Inspector General (OIG) November 2001 Report :

  • indicates that 15% of psychotropic drug use among nursing home residents
    did not meet criteria for “appropriate”. 

  • reports failure for psychotropic drug use to be “appropriate”

  • Chronic use of psychotropic medications without documented justification
    (ie., diagnosis, symptoms, etc.)

  • Example: Few or non-significant symptoms charted.

  • Failure to document benefits of psychotropic medications including no
    baseline or pre-treatment vs. on-drug data comparisons

  • Example: Administration of drug without reference to targeted symptoms/problems
    and no pre- vs. post-evaluations to assess medication effects

  • Psychotropic drug prescribed did not match with the DSM-IV diagnosis

  • Example: Antipsychotic medication with a depression diagnosis.

  • Use of psychotropic medications without justification

  • Example: Use of anti-depressant without symptoms of depression documented
