Long-term Care Facilities:
The Mental Health Challenge

Nursing homes have become the “largely forgotten psychiatric hospitals” (Dr. William Reichman)

  • an estimated 80% of all nursing home residents present with
    a mental disorder (DSM-IV diagnosis)

  • psychotropic drugs are prescribed for 18 – 34% (defined as moderate use) of
    nursing home residents

  • An estimated 20% of all nursing home residents receive some type of
    physical restraint during their stay

Problem

  • Despite overwhelming evidence indicating the presence of significant mental health problems among nursing home residents, psychiatric and psychological services
within these settings have been lacking

Result:

  • Family practice physicians, hospitalists and general practitioners have been forced to provide psychiatric and psychological services with limited support.

Result

  • Nursing home staffs have been forced to respond to behavioral and mental health problems among residents thereby diverting valuable staff resources away from needed care services
